Most companies do. And that is a good thing – especially if you have multiple datacenters, branches, or locations and you want proper DC selection and replication control.
But there is ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ ๐๐บ๐ฎ๐น๐น ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐น that many environments still run with:
Default intersite replication.
By default, Active Directory intersite replication is And if you openย Active Directory Sites and Services, you quickly find the annoying part:
โ ๏ธ You ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป๐ป๐ผ๐ set the replication interval lower thanย ๐ญ๐ฑ ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐๐๐ฒ๐ย in the GUI.
For many modern environments, that is not ideal. The network can usually handle faster replication, but admins still end up with the same questions:
โช๏ธ โHas it replicated yet?โ
Can you see the change on your DC?โ
โช๏ธ โLetโs wait a few more minutesโฆโ
Annoying?
But there is also a
This replication behavior can create a condition where an attacker may abuse bad password attempt handling and PDC behavior to
๐ ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฝ๐น๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ exact finding in myย Windows Infrastructure Securityย course – and right now, my biggest discount event is almost ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ, so you can still get the ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ $๐ฒ๐ฌย untilย June 21 (link in the comments).
You can make intersite replication behave like intrasite replication by enablingย change notificationย on the site link.
โ Not from the normal GUI.
โ But throughย ADSI Edit.
That enables change notification for that site link.
โ Faster replication
โ Less โhas it replicated yet?โ waiting
โ Eliminated exposure to the lockout bypass scenario mentioned above
And no, this is not some shady unsupported trick. This configuration has been documented by Microsoft for years and I use it regularly in real environments.
